I live in Los Angeles, and I have noticed a trend growing all around, especially with today's youth. Seemingly more and more young people are taking on the image of being "alternative" or "indie." I would like to know from a psychological point of view why this is happening. Previously, one would dress different (alternative, indie, goth, etc), for just that reason: to be different. However, now it is visibly becoming more normal to be alt. I was in Reno, NV recently, and it is even more apparent there, with almost every kid at the mall dressing either indie or hardcore. When I was in school, the only "different" kids was that group of like, 5 goth kids on the lawn. Is this simply due to that look being "in" right now? Looking for serious answers please.

I'm in high school and I agree with you: looking "alternative" is popular right now. Kids seem to think that in order to show their originality and uniqueness, they must dress differently. However, I think that a person's individuality really has to do with what's on the inside, not how you dress. Kids think that they must prove the fact that they are different and unique to the world and they do that by dressing alternatively. But now, everyone is dressing like that, so in reality the kids who think they are being different by dressing that way are really just blending in.
I don't understand why people don't simply feel comfortable being themselves and showing that by the way he or she talks and behaves. Dress shouldn't be the only factor when one determines their individuality.

Teenagers especially are always looking for ways to be an individual without standing out so much it is obvious.
Add to that the fact that culture changes, and today's teen culture is different that the culture when you were a teen.
Apparently what you talked about is the "in" culture right now.

I wear a kimono or kilt on a regular basis. I do it because they look good, and they are very comfortable.

Try expanding your horizons and do things because you like them, not because somebody else told you liked them, but because you desided for yourself that you like them. You have never done that, and that is why you don't understand.
