thermal conductivity.
In other words, it's a good insulator.
I read an an account a whlie back, in an adventure magazine, where a hunting party hired an Inuit guide to take them out on the tundra and show them how to build a traditional igloo.
They built the igloo within a few hours, large enough to shelter 5 men, and inside it quickly became warm enough that they could strip down to their shirtsleeves, just on retained body heat and a candle. Every so often they had to open the door of the igloo to let in a cold blast, to freeze the meltoff and condensation on the inner walls. The anglos were surprised at how comfy it got in there. The secret is insulation.
