If the US would have been less paranoid about fighting the cold war, we wouldn't have caused the mess in Afganistan.

US should have understood that communism would burn itself out eventually-- communism cannot be tolerated by groups of people for long periods of time due to human traits. The US did a crappy job of communicating with the USSR and just let tensions build (although it takes 2 to communicate and both were equally paranoid about each other).

US still hasn't grasped the concept that one cannot fight ideology with physical power.One can only fight ideology with ideology. This is the same mistake they had with the cold war and the same mistake they are making with radical Muslim terrorists.

US role in origins of Cold War-- unable to understand how to fight a different ideology.
foreign consequences- the birth of Al Quida, and creation and propagation of a deadlier (for those who believe it as well as for those who oppose it) ideology

same mistakes over and over and over and over again
