When reading Poe, for the full horror effect, pay careful attention to the punctuation. Especially for the "Tell-Tale Heart," if you pause as you should at the punctuation--this will result in a breathless effect and increased heart rate. This is an ingenious literary device.
Also, go to www.ask.com (this is a very useful research search site!!!) When prompted type Poe's use of horror in his work. This will result in a multitude of results. Click on the one The-Gold Bud-Introduction; this is one of the first results. I think that you will find this link particularly useful, as it applies directly to your question. Also, several of the other results are useful. You just simply have to weed out what you wish to use.
