I have a Seagate external hard drive that I leave on almost all the time. Is this bad for the drive (i.e., will this cause it to break more quickly/easily)?

YES
almost all the external hard drives Ive seen run hotter then an internal drive because of the small enclosure its in, also they usually have very cheep inadequate power supply's that leave them venerable to voltage spikes and line noise, external drives in my experience never last very long and you should use it as little as possible to maintain your backups.

when they are not in use they only run at idle speed and if not used for a few minutedm turn off completel, however . . .

yes it will reduce the life of the drive, but even if you leave it on all the time, technology would have advanced so much that by the time it breaks you would have bought a more modern, faster / larger one anyway

It should be fine if you leave it on. Face it, any hard disk can break. Just make sure you have a backup of your files.
