After high school, you will need 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3-7 years of residency (length depends on what specialty you pick), 1-3 years of fellowship (if you plan on SUBspecializing).
So a typical cardiologist:
4 years med school, 3 years internal medicine residency, 3 years cardiology fellowship =10 years of learning after you finish college. Remember that residency and fellowships are more like jobs- you get paid (although very little), and there are no classes- you read on your own.
And a typical Neurosurgeon:
4 years med school, usually about 7 years residency = 11 years total
You can study what ever you want in college as long as you take the required premedical courses (usually biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, english etc)

Just remember to keep your GPA up. If you are interested in scientific research and can do some in college, it looks very good. And don't forget to participate in extracurricular activities and have fun in college.

Every college has different requirements so you need to talk to a counselor. They also have booklets to give to you so that you know what you need to take. Normally it takes 4 years to go to college. Then med school and residency can be another 3 to 4 years.

It's takes about 7 years after high school to become a doctor. As for your undergraduate major, there are several things that would be helpful. Some school offer pre-med programs, also consider biology and biochemistry.
