When we tried to start it, it hesitated and sputtered before starting. While it ran it continued to sputter and seemed like it would stall out. When it was put into drive it lurched forward and reved up.
This is a '99 Ford Windstar minivan, automatic. We've never had a problem with it until this. It drove perfectly fine just the day before.
What could it be?

sounds like the throttle position sensor or the idle air control..then again you could have a vacuum leak...or a clogged injector...have you tried cranking it again since this past time...check everything from the airbox to the throttle box for a loose connection..check to see if the coolant is at normal level..because if the coolant is below the temp. sending unit..it will throw off the computer and give a false reading.. check all the fluid levels. and get back to me...

I would change the fuel filter, it's a cheap item to start with. Also some fuel injector cleaner would be beneficial

To me it sounds like something in the throttle body,( carburetor ). So have a mechanic take a good look there. !
