It's about ideals gone crazy and moral relativism. A man is devoted to protecting his family and being true to his word. These ideals age pursued so absolutely, that they are actually corrupted by having no respect for the lives of others who are outside his family and to whom he owes no promises. He becomes a ruthless criminal who is able to hold onto the idea that he is a man of honor.

The power of the movie (and the novel) is that the viewer (reader) is made to sympathize so strongly with the positive qualities of the main character that they overlook the evil side. In fact, the line between good and evil is blurred, by showing that people like police, polititcians, heads of OTHER familes, are corrupt and evil. In a world of people who all do evil things, the man who is truer to his own ideals is the only one who looks sympathetic.
