Will it feel different than drilling into a spot without a joist? If so, how? I have a stud finder but it's cheap and doesn't always work correctly.

This is my first time, sorry if this is a dumb question. :/

Jamie.......1)drywall is probaably only 1/2" inch thick so...........take your screw or niail and tap it into your wall or ceiling.....................if at 1/2 into the wall it suddenly is ALOT harder to drive, youve hit wood.
2)if you dont want to make holes in your wall you either need a better stud finder or sometimes, if you put your head against the wall you can see where there might be a sloightly indented spot....thats probably where there is a screw or nail to attach the drywall to wood
2)once you have successfully located a stud in a wall or a joist in your ceiling........you can usually get them all without guess work because the distance between the studs/joists is almost always 16 inches center to center

HAPPY HUNTING

no is not a dumb question the plaster or board on the ceiling in a modern house makes it easy . Its probably only about at most an inch thick. so put a piece of tape on your drill bit about an inch and a half back from the point . now it may take several goes to get a joist or stud. but if you hit one after the first hole where you miss one then you will know ..and use a small drill bit. on an old plastered ceiling or wall it may be more difficult to do this as the backing of the plaster is plobably wooden lats . if your place is really old get help.

The best thing to do is use a small finishing nail to find the stud, then move the nail about 1/4 inch at a time until you are no longer on the stud (you will know because the nail will go through the soft sheetrock without much resistance. When you find where the edge of the stud is, go back in the direction of the stud about 7/8 of an inch and drill there.

if you miss the joist, you will go through the plasterboard with ease. plasterboard is only 3/8 or 1/2 inch thick, with 1/4 of plaster on it. you will know if you miss the joist. one way to be sure is to lift the floor above and puncture the ceiling with a nail becide the joist. then you will see it from below. also you wont drill any pipes or wires which are running through the joists.good luck
