direct democracy is a system in which voters vote for issues.

An example is a referendum in my town in which a new bridge is being considered. If more than 60% of the voters say "yes" the bridge will be built...but typically direct democracy may only require 51%

Representative democracy is where voters vote on PEOPLE to reperesent them, and those people make the decisions, an example is voting for a senator who then tries to vote the way people will llike (in theorey)

One advantage of representational democracy is that people vote for an expert, who understands the issues better than the average person. (I'd rather have someone smarter than me running the country instead of a mob of average joes)
One disadvantage is that person is capable of doing the exact OPPOSITE of what the people want, therefore not reflecting the democratic ideal of "government by the people"

A Direct democracy is where all the people get together and make decisions about governing (think Ancient Greek city-states). A Representative Democracy is what we have in the US now, the people vote for other people to represent their ideals and make decisions about governing.

In a direct democracy, each member of the democracy has an equal vote and votes on every issue. In a representative democracy, each member votes for a representative who then votes for the general public.

A direct democracy means every eligible voter can vote on every action their government takes. The citystate of Athens was a direct democracy. The eligible men would meet and vote on everything and the government could only do what the voters approved of them doing.

A representative democracy means you elect representatives who vote on law based on what they think their consituency wants. They are not obligated to vote any particular way, however, and can vote "their conscience" if they choose to. The government does not always have to have a direct vote in order to act.

Direct democracy is very time consuming, having to vote on every little thing that comes along. The alternative is to elect others to do the work for us, hopefully acting in our best interests. That is what we entrust Congress to do.
