So are you ready for this?

1 byte = 8 bits
1 kilobyte (kb) = 1024 bytes
1 megabyte (Mb) = 1024 kb = 1,048,576 bytes
1 gigabyte (Gb) =1024 Mb = 1,048,576kb = 1,073,741,824 bytes
1 terabyte (Tb) = 1025 Gb etc etc etc

That is trickier than it sounds. 1024 is the correct answer BUT... with hard drives, manufacturers call 1 million bytes a megabyte, so when they give the amount in gigabytes, that isn't what you get. You get 1,000,000,000 bytes.

Sort of like calling a 3 /12 inch x 1 3/4 piece of lumber a 2x4 I suppose.

In any case, that is why when you format the silly things, you always end up with less gigabytes then you expected from the box.
