Panda, a few comments:

1) Use m-w.com or a really good ACTUAL dictionary.
2) Be sure to spell the words write when you do the homework and when you take the test on it. Your teacher will mark off if it's spelled incorrectly.
3) You need to think about context. Since these obviously are from a piece of literature your class is reading, be able to use it in the CONTEXT in which it appears in your reading. I sometimes have my students find the sentence in the text where it appears to help with this contextual understanding.

Don't just cut and paste the answers you found here. Actually put forth the effort to understand the assignment and the words.

persistent = tenaciously or obstinately continuing despite problems or difficulties

treason = a violation of the allegiance owed by somebody to his or her own country, e.g. by aiding an enemy

senile= forgetful, confused, or otherwise mentally less acute in later life

protégé = young person who receives help, guidance, training, and support from somebody who is older and has more experience or influence

coliseum = a large building used as a theater or for sports events

prostitute = somebody who is paid to provide sexual intercourse or other sex acts

deception = the practice of deliberately making somebody believe things that are not true

"You filthy son of a whore?" = considered offensive
Latrines = a toilet, especially a communal one on a military base

Sentimental = affected acutely by emotional matters, often to the point of mawkishness

Cosmopolitan = composed of or containing people from different countries and cultures

Convenient = useful or suitable, because it makes things easier, is close by, or does not involve much effort or trouble

Aphrodisiac = something that arouses or intensifies sexual desire

legitimately = complying with the law, or having official status defined by law
