Prohbably some range here depending on the specific model. I'll say an overall "9" as a direct answer. If you go with a Carrera 4 of this era you may find some other problems. Targas and Cabriolets that are in the 10+ year old catagory may have some leaks that need addressing. Pretty much any version of the 911 is likely to have some issues, and the 964s were no exception: fly wheel and head gaskets being the two that spring to mind, though most cars out there now have probably long since had the fixes for these implemented.

The 964s I've been around are been very reliable. Porsches in generally are very reliable cars, but that always comes with the added note that "they were all expensive cars to start with , and parts and repairs will be priced accordingly."

the 964s are fairly reliable, especially when it comes to the Manual ones.

they are equipped with the G50 transmission, possibly the best tranny ever made, and the motor used in them had decades of research put into it, and is very bulletproof.

The bad thing is, they do have a tendency for electrical Gremlins, which are very common for electronically advanced cars of the era.

Most importantly, remember, the car is 15 years old, and no matter how perfect the car, it will have its bumps and rattles, and will be expensive to fix. If youre a handy mechanic, and get a shop manual on CD on ebay for like 10 bucks, you can do most of the work yourself. theyre pretty easy to work on.

The little stuff will add up over time, but the general mechanics of the cars are extremely good. You shouldnt have to do any rebuilding for a long, long time.

I give them an 8 for the age, By todays standards maybe a 6-7 (remember, its 15 years old). Youll get your electrical gremlins, or it might not want to start on a cold morning, but overall youll enjoy the car far far more than the bugs will bother you.

on a side note, maybe you should look into 930 turbos. Theyre a bit less reliable, a hell of a lot more fun, and the best part is that it will appreciate in value. Granted they are rough and scary (which is half the fun).

I highly suggest getting one if you want a fun, sporty classic that will always put a smile on your face.

I worked for a porsche dealer in MTL. Que. and the 944s usually only ever needed regular maintenance.A few things like using factory original br. pads is important, as Ive seen aftermarket pads ruin very expensive wheels. A lot of parts can be had in the manufacturers packing instead or Porsche and the price can be as much as half! Bosche; Ate; jurid, girling, etc. A little carefull buying and the car wont cost too much to maintain. Plus they`re a blast to drive!

Give them a 9. Very little goes wrong with them, but when it does it costs you BIG!
