A person posted a question asking us to pray for someone in an email she received. As I always do when I hear these stories I check out Snopes. It's an excellent source to find out fact from Urgan Myth. It turns out that the story she posted was some what true but it was a very old story dating back to 2001. I posted the link. I get two thumbs up and two down. I'm just wondering what people are thinking when they thumb down and answer that is researched and provides the truth? Is it because I went through the trouble of locating the information?

Bonnie, you did read the snopes link I provided that showed that:
1. The women went into remission 5 years ago and
2. The name is wrong anyway.
I'm not saying it's a waste of time to pray, but to post and forward stories like this without researching is irresponsible at best. I always research these stories before taking them seriously. And this one was not to be taken seriously.

Because not everyone is mature and smart. Unfortunately, that's one of the major loopholes with Y!A - anyone can neg silently without any real reason.
Personally, I have a child who goes through all my answers at least twice a day and then neggs them all. It's quite humourous that I'd affect someone *that* much that they have to take time out of each and every day to do it.
It all has to do with being trashy and just not having a clue.

People hate to hear something that goes against them. I hate how people will make an ignorant question, perhaps dealing with racism or other hatred, and when I tell it like it is (how it is ignorance), I get thumbs down as well. It is because the people who read it probably agreed with the person. I would not take it personally, people are misusing the thumbs down to mean "I disagree" instead of what I think it is there for. I figure it was meant to show others that the person was not answering seriously or were completely wrong. However, it seems to mean that you stated something that went against their religious beliefs perhaps and they did not like it. Some people cannot handle the truth. Keep being honest though. Yahoo Answers needs more reasonable people on here, the ignorance rating is getting way too high.

Well, I have a number of theories on the Thumbs Down (TD)
1. It's my nephew who gets on here and TDs me when he's in a foul mood (which is often since he's a teenager---luv ya bud if you see this).
2. It's very young people that get bored with true answers and are only looking for funnies.
3. It's people that are a bit self-righteous, as is the case for the answer you described, and felt you maybe trying to offend the asker.
I only TD when an answer doesn't offer any opinion or information, or when I know it's wrong--not on opinions but fact.

I have no idea what goes through some peoples minds. Maybe they just do it to be nasty, knowing they can't be found out. It makes me mad when people take a lot of time and trouble to give good advice, then get a thumbs down. Someone once asked what dates our birthdays are on, and every person who answered got a thumbs down. Doesn't make sense

Maybe some people just thought you were talking down to a person asking for a prayer, they probably never thought of the fact that the story was old. But even if it was old, why would that make a difference in if you pray for them or not....

needless to say, they do no longer trust you. by using the way, a number of the worlds maximum knowledgeable human beings have faith in God. i individually do no longer think of you're smarter than the astronauts, many docs, many scientist, biologists, just to call some that have faith in God. The bible itself talks approximately sensible human beings. As Paul wrote of God: “‘He catches the sensible of their own crafty.’ And back: ‘Jehovah is conscious that the reasonings of the sensible men are futile.’”—1Co 3:19, 20; learn Ex a million:9, 10, 20, 21; Lu 20:19-26. a million Cor a million:20 the place is the sensible guy? the place the scribe? the place the debater of this methodology of issues? did no longer God make the know-how of the international silly? you won't be able to say your fact is certainty till you carry out slightly greater investigating.

I answered that question and the story brought tears to my eyes. I said a prayer for the couple and don't feel bad about that, I'm just tee'd off that someone would post a question like that!! Thanks for the heads up on Snopes.com, I'd never heard of it before. As far as the thumbs down, who knows why people do what they do, ignore it.

I think it was the way you worded your answer. Also, you didn't really say anything pertinent to their appeal. They asked for prayers, and you answered with something that sounded a little smart. You said "This one is actually true. I'm surprised" This implies that you thought they were lying, which was probably frowned upon. That's why I think you got the thumbs down.

Aside from peoples opinions, be aware that sometimes a thumb could be done in error....and also have a sensitivity of someone's sore nerve being grabbed from a question or answer posted on Yahoo.

Probably because when people ask a question, they're usually looking for the answer only they want to hear...if you say something they've never heard of or take what you're saying too personally, they automaticly thumbs down you :) Ignorant people..blah! I don't know what else to say, I hope I helped.
