im writing an essay. i got the introduction and the other bit act 3 scene 5 which i have to do but act 1 scene 1 is something im stuck on.
the question is how is conflict important in romeo and juliet. i understand that conflict is shown in the beginning to draw the audience in but thats it, i dont understand why the prince's speech is important

The Prince was saying that he was sick and tired of all the fighting going on being the Montague's and Capulet's and that anyone caught fighting would be immediately banished from Verona. Of course, there is going to be conflict between the two families..they've hated each other since God knows when. It's a matter of when and not if they are going to clash again.

The conflict is important because the type of play Shakespear wrote Romeo and Juliet in is Tragedy, and a blood feud is indeed tragic and would cause many deaths - which is necessary in a tragedy.

Also, the Prince told the Capulets and Montagues in his speech that any more fighting would lead to the death of those responsible. Because of this decision, Romeo was banished later on because of his involvement in Tybalt's death (the Prince loosened up a bit so that he was banished instead of executed).
