Most likely reason is that the CD laser is broken. Only solution to that problem is replacing the drive.

I had this problem, unfortuanatly the drive was broken and stuck in one mode..
Try this, turn off the PC and boot it with a CD in the drive. If this lets you read the CD then the drive isnt broken and it's some software problem.

One of the drop down option menu is proably set to dvd. click on cd.

Are you sure the cd hasn't got a code in it to stop you playing it ? A lot do now to stop you copying them.
