There's no single place to go for this, unfortunately. In the US, you can get some of the USGS maps as overlays here:

Search your state for GIS data, Michigan has a great geo data library and you can download topo's of every county that you can open with paint. Google earth is composed of sttelite images, and one of the problems with sttelite images are determining if it is a hole or hill. The are whole college courses on air and sattelite image interpetation
