The Byzantine Empire

They lasted 1116 years from 337 to1453. They survived through wars with Europe and the middle East. And the built a well structured society. In my opinion, Constantinople was one of the greates cities ever built. And Constantine the Great had one of the coolest names ever. And the Byzantine Empire had Belisarius, one of the best generals in the history of the world.

The Roman Empire rose and fell in a spectacular manner. The Egyptian, Chinese and Mesopotamian Dynasties are all well recorded in history. In modern days, the Otto-Hungarian Empire died at the end of World War One and the British Empire gave way to human rights and the notion a country has the right to self government and self determination. But the greatest mystery we have and what could have been the greatest Empires could be the Mayan or Aztec Empires because all they left behind was mystery.

The largest land empire of all time was the Mongolian Empire established by Genghis Khan and his descendents. It stretched from China and Korea to Hungary in Europe, and Saudi Arabia in the Middle East.

The largest naval empire of all time was Great Britain's colonial empire. The phrase "the sun never sets on the British empire" pretty much says it all (it's a literal phrase)

For me personally, I would pick the Roman Empire for the greatest empire in Europe of all time, and the Tang Dynasty Empire as the greatest empire in Asia of all time.

I agree with surf_finl in that the empire he speaks of began about 200BC when the Romans began to conquer Carthage and Greece and Turkey (slowly). I differ with him only when he says that there was a change about 337AD. As late as the crusades, the Byzantines thought that they were the Roman empire and that the Europeans were Franks. 10 points to surf_finl!Let him carry off the prize!
