It used to be that when crossing over they would only sporatically check the vehicles, ask you where you were from and be done with you. Now with all the security efforts they check every vehicle, and check passports at almost every entrance. If you have luggage with you, they will ask you to pull aside so they can inspect your luggage. If you purchase anything in Canada and try to cross it you will have to pay a tax at the border.

Ok, first of all. They aren't MEAN. Give me a break. Secondly you can expect a LOT from our country. There has got to be a good reason why you are making the trip to begin with. As far as crossing the border it's standard procedure. They will ask you what your business is traveling to Canada. How long you plan on staying. If you have any illegal substances, etc. and will ask you for some identification. You might expect a bit of a lineup though. Have fun!

it is easy
the lineup is MUCH shorter going into canada than coming back
5min vs. 50min
bring an ID, a passport is best. tell them why you are coming and for how long.
if you are a felon, you may have trouble.
the main reason for the passport is coming back to the US.
they wear camoflage, are nasty, might threaten you, and usually only have 2 lanes open to make everyone wait.
btw the guy who said "dont expect a lot...eh", his website says he is a "civilian contractor" aka mercenary.
Maybe they asked him to leave his guns in the US?
if you get a chance you should take a break at a community center like this one in Langley, BC:

Is is approx 30mins from the border and
costs 8.50 for the whole family to use everything!

I haven't been since 9-11-01, BUT you should bring your passport with you ... not for the Canadian authorities, but to get back to the states.

You get hassled more coming back into the U.S. then you do going into Canada. Just bring all your I.D. and you shouldn't have any problem either way.

They check everyone. I have seen people being turned away and sent back to the US, especially those with criminal records.

It's crazy... I went with my kids and we forgot passports... they asked my kids if they were being kidnapped. (!) it took about an hour. BRING YOUR PASSPORTS, IDS, DRIVERS LICENSE> you have to tell them why you are crossing.
