Alcoholism is an actual disease. Hard to say whether those who suffer with it have low self esteem to begin with or that it develops as a result of the disease itself. It is kind of like the chicken and the egg question. They do indeed for the most part suffer with esteem issues. It is said that the substance that is abused is only 10 percent of the problem and that the other 90 percent has to do with the thinking of the addict.

people with low self esteem are more likley to develop coping mechanisims and self medicate. Alcohol can give the effect of feeling more confident which people who have low self esteem do not gave on there own, however i cant say i know if this is true or not, id guess it is though
