Not really.
Their thumb isn't truly opposable, but set slightly lower than the fingers, allowing a small amount of opposition. It also looks a bit like an opposable thumb-hand, which is why you so often hear that they have it.
It allows them to use their hands in a way that is nearly as dexterous as if they had true opposable thumbs.

No, they are not opposable, but they are pretty close. raccoons have a very high degree of dexterity, and their hands are almost as advanced as some of the lower primates. Raccoons can actually grip and turn things like door handles for instance. The key to raccoons success is not only in their dexterity, but also in the fact that they can practically "taste" with their paws. A raccoon's paws are almost 1000 times more sensitive than a human hand, so they excel in other areas.
