I'm a little older than most of the people i speak with about anime.. Myself being 24 and most of them being around 16-20.
Personally I love anime.. Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell.. Miyasaki films.(or however you spell it). The list is endless and not only a Best of the best of anime but alot of them would compete with with major Real films for storyline and direction. Take Grave of the Fireflies for example.

What i want to know is why people love such drivel as Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball etc.
I've tried to watch these and after 10 minutes of pure unbridled crap I can't stand anymore. They're so un-involved.. Ninjas can sit on the ceiling? Why? they just can. No explanation, they just trained and therefor.. Can..
Ninja stories that leech from real history but then change it when the need arises. Romance that is no better than watching Neighbours or East Enders.
I just don't get it..

To sum up.. How can anyone think Naruto is better than Samurai Champloo?

Good answer Sylvie.. But the people i chat with are up to my age.. mostly around 19.. old enough to know what is good and what isnt. And i was watching Akira etc when i was really way too young to be watching stuff like that. And loving it.

I haven't seen Naruto or the other stuff listed ( your fav. list and the "drivel" list) I've seen a preveiw of Ghost in the shell.

But I think that some anime shows are for different age groups, like pokemon would be for younger children while Ghost in the shell would be for older people.

Hi,

I must admit that whilst I love Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in The Shell etc I also enjoy Naruto and Bleach (and some even more childish ones). They give some escapism and fun that I suppose is meant to appeal to children but over time also reveal an extra depth to them that is often missing from Western cartoons. I can definitely understand being disappointed with Naruto, Bleach etc when compared to Akira and co but I think the purpose to them is very different. I enjoy watching them partially because they can't be taken too seriously.

p.s I'm 26 and a girl which definitely puts me outside the Shonen anime target audience but oh well.

well im 17, i use to like dragonball z but the was well over 7 yrs ago, i hate naruto and i have watched loads of animes which were crap thinking it would get better towards the end but it was still crap anyways. but there is 2 or maybe 3 i can recomment to you, they have real storylines to it and have a great ending to it
3. GANTZ - for adults lots of violence age rating 18+, its ending isnt explained well but you do get a good idea of what happened.

2. GUNGRAVE - ganster type anime for age 15, this is also very good its about 2 people who try to get to the top of.... ill leave it there but it has a real good meaningful ending

1st FULL METAL ALCHEMIST (my personal favourite) it starts of really good ,1/2 through its gets even better and the end was quality10/10*, the best thing i ever seen. i actually stopped watching sky tv cause i knew there would never be anythink else to watch that has a better storyline to it plus there was a movie that came out for it afterwards which gives you the proper ending and ties up loose ends from the series.
its not all out on dvd at hmv.uk but if you havnt seen it and you want to but it, i know this place at camden town who sell it all complete really cheap and its in english dub

Shounen anime (meaning : young boy) , aims at the lower age groups

Shounen contains, lots of "special powers", action, fantasy-elements that appeal to these age groups

Hence Naruto, Bleach and Dragon Ball Z appeal to people who enjoy special powers and enjoy watching a character kick other people's butts. (superheroes , etc , i'm sure you enjoy watching Spiderman kick butt as well)

personally i enjoy naruto bleach, dragon ball z , but i also enjoy anime with deeper meanings like Serial Experiments Lain, Paranoia Agent, GITS and other such series

Samurai Champloo (and Cowboy Bebop for that matter) > Naruto, in terms of style, and realism of story any day
