This is a 30ft ficus that I would like to kill before removing it.

Dig it up or spray it with RoundUp. Not sure what you are asking other than that.

For a mature tree like that, you would need to cut the surface of the bark and then apply herbicide (weed killer) directly into the cuts.

Do this now before spring starts, because then, the sap starts to flow. Make a series of downward cuts through the bark, leaving the frill connected to the tree. Make these cuts around the entire circumference of the tree trunk with an axe or hatchet. Immediately apply the selected herbicide into the cuts. Avoid spring applications when sap flowing out of the wound will prevent good absorption.

You need to make a few cuts in the bark, nearer to the roots. Then apply the herbicide TORDON to the cuts made, with a paintbrush. The tree will take some time to die but it will.

Take a piece of bare copper wire. Wrap it around the tree 3 or 4 times,at the base ,very tight.This will kill any tree.The tighter,the quicker.
