It would be possible but you would have to have an accomplice or two to get away with it. Someone would have to say they saw you dead. Then they would have to fake a cremation because others may want to pay their last respects by seeing the supposed dead body.
If you are thinking about this in order to collect insurance, you would have to supply a valid death certificate.
Then you would have to move very far away and hope no one who knows you would ever see you.
You would never be able to get in touch with friends and family that didn't know about the hoax.
Personally, if this hoax was to collect insurance, I would live in constant fear that I would die by some horrific means.
It seems like there would be a lot of loose ends that you would have to make sure were tied up. If you haven't been through all the procedures by taking care of all the details of a real person's death, you might not think about a step or two and you would be a "goner" (pun intended).
Think about how much you and your accomplice(s) would be fined if you were found out.
The amount of the fine might be another interesting question to pose on Yahoo! A. Wonder if there would be any stars awarded - tee, hee?

Anything is possible. It's relatively simple to fake your own death, if you think out things and plan accordingly. But your life would have to be at a very low point to take such a drastic measure. You could never ever be around those you love again. And...if you're caught faking your own death, the fines and jail time can be horrible in the United States... If memory serves...the fines and jail time in the UK are even higher....

I'm not sure whether you are refering to appearing dead physically, or being declared dead legally.

Being declared dead legally depends on the statutes in your country; in some cases of you just walk out and disappear without trace for seven years or so, your kin can apply to have you declared legally dead.

Causing apparent death physically is what it is claimed voodoo priests do to people. Basically they give you a toxin that shuts down our body and maintains only the minimum functions to keep you alive and these are slowed down considerably. So to most people you'd appear dead, virtually no pulse, no breath...

The toxin is reportedly from a puffer fish.

yes, if you know the right people and the right places, it actually could be pretty difficult, but don't get cought, that would be humiliating and you would probably have to go to court and get a huge fine!
