Not quite. The Germans anticipated that Italy would surrender, if not actually switch sides, and had positioned troops to immediately take over infrastructure. Mussolini was actually booted out of the Fascist Council, and fired by King Victor Emmanuel. He was imprisoned in the Grand Sasso ski resort. He was rescued by German special operators led by Otto Skorzeny (Sepp Dietrich was also in the Waffen SS, but was a panzer division commander on the eastern front at this time). Later, he formed a Nazi puppet state called "The Salo Republic". After Axis resistance collapsed in 1945, he tried to escape to Switzerland. About 100 miles from the border, his convoy was intercepted by Communist partisans. Both he and his mistress Claretta Petacci were hanged in the Piazza in Milan-despite efforts of the British and US advisors who wanted him alive.

Both his party, and some of his family (namely his granddaughter who is also a model) are active in Italian politics to this day.

The Italians as a people were not as hell bent on that war as the Germans seemed to have been. There was quite a bit of dissention the whole time, and Mussolini ended up hung by his thumbs and dragged through the street.

So I would have to give that a "yes and no". No, Mussolini to the best of my knowledge did not join the western Allies. Yes, quite a few of the Italian people were working with the allies.

Not quite true. Mussolini never sided with or joined with the allies. He was a fascist and an ally to Germany to his dying day, which was when Italian partisans caught him and his mistress near the border of Italy and neutral Switzerland trying to escape the advancing allied armies. The Italians hung him by his thumbs and beat him to death. When his corpse was cut down, they urinated on him and dragged him through the streets.

The average italian was fairly apathetic to fascism and Mussolini's grandiose plans of empire building through alliances with like-minded fascist countries (Germany and Japan) and wars of aggression on weaker countries. They simply did not care all that much about politics and war until the war went sour on them and they began to suffer defeats. Hitler's army always was in the situation of having to try and rescue the Italian army from defeat.
The average Italian thought that Mussolini was a boastful, pompous ***. I do too. Have you ever seen video footage of Mussolini making a speech? What an ***hole. When the war got so bad for Italy, that is when the people first turned on Mussolini and then the Germans.

Not Mussolini. He was ousted by the Fascist ground council and the Italian King made Field Marshal Badoglio head of the Italian state. Then the Italians changed sides but they added little to the Allied war effort.
However, Germans moved quickly to disarm the disloyal Italian troops in Greece and Albania and prevent them from either joining the allies or handing over their weapons to the partisans. The Germans were largely successful. Hitler ordered that Italian officers caught aiding the allies be shot.
An example of this is shown in the Nicolas Cage movie "Captain Corelli's Mandolin."

Absolutely not. Mussolini was saved from the Allies' advance by forces led by a German commando, Sepp Dietrich. Mussolini established himself in the north of Italy in a so-called Republic of Salo. Meanwhile, the king Victor Emmanuel III gathered his courage and fired Mussolini as prime minister. Marshal Badoglio concluded peace with the allies.

No, but that's what the Italians did to the Germans in the First World War.

After the Italians strung Mussolini up, the Germans invaded Italy to keep the country on their side.
