I love AFI, 3 days grace, bullet for my valentine, papa roach, my chemical romance and the gorillaz, but most of my friends and family think I'm crazyand/or gothic. But I'm NOT!! Wut do u think. (btw I have a Mexican boyfriend who loves rap music)

You know I'm never surprised by white racism, it's a given and to be expected. It has always surprised me though how willing we black people are to put each other down for the most ridiculous reasons. When I was growing up in the 70s I was often accused of being an oreo because I spoke proper english and got good grades in school. At one point I even tried to develop a more "black" speech pattern just so that I'd be accepted. There came a point though when I took a look around at who I was trying to be accepted by, and just said " To hell with them. If they can't like me for the person that I am then screw them!" You may be in need of just such an epiphany. The people worth worrying about are the ones who just accept you for you. To hell with the rest.

That is such a stupid term.. you should be able to listen to whatever you want without having to justify it! I've never been called an Oreo (I'm British, think maybe its more of an American thing?) but at school I remember not getting on with lot of other black girls because by liking different music and speaking properly I wasn't acting ''black''. I used to feel bad but hey - I enjoy my rock music and the fact that I can pronounce words properly. You do the same - dont get caught up in these stupid labels! Rock on!

I find accusations like "Oreo" rather disturbing, especially when black students are accused of "acting white" simply because they strive for academic success in a white-dominated field of study. All labels of this kind imply that black culture has no room for individuality. I hope to heaven that this is never the case, because it would be a sad day indeed.

sigh

Won't it be nice when people stop thinking in these kinds of terms?

I don't know how people consider you (to answer your top-level question). Is that what they say?

It's a shame that in a country that prides itself on valuing individuality, people aren't allowed to listen to the music of their choice in peace.

But this is America. If you don't act, think, and feel in every way exactly identical to those around you, there MUST be something wrong with YOU (not the control freaks who want to tell you what music to love).

Originally, "oreo" was an expression used for those trying to pretend to act white (or those who fought against racial equality) -- not people who just happened to like a particular kind of music.

I fail to see the reason why people have to label other into a certain group[stereotyping]. Why not just live and let live, and the world would be a lot better for it.

It's called individual taste and exposure. I like opera, rap, world music, classical, etc. and I am a black woman. My tastes are eclectic and I have a global world view.

I think you are a originial, who do not let culture or race shape your opinion. You like what you like and that's great. I think people should be more conern with enjoying their lives than trying to keep up with Jones. I say just keep doing whatever feels good.
