I believe the queen paid for his voyage, and he said he was bringing god with him.

Columbus's voyages were always linked to three main reasons: God, gold, and glory. Christopher means, "a bearer of Christ." So, he wanted to influence Christianity to others. But he also wanted ten percent and a title if his voyage was successful. Plus, with gold, you can use it to get what you want and deliver souls to God. So these three motives were always mixed together.

Queen Isabella supported the first voyage because during that period, the Portuguese (I think?) had found a route to the Far East to do trade. In some way, it's like competition. The queen risked it with Columbus's idea--that a short route existed to the Far East if you sail West. Thus, wanting to find a better trade route, Isabella supported Columbus for his first voyage. However, instead of finding that shorter route to the Orient, he sailed to North America.

So, what factors would it appear to be then?
