Any kind of court case where one party opposes another except for criminal cases - An adoption proceeding or a petition for name change would be not be examples of civil litigation because one party is not opposing another.
In civil litigation, one party (the plaintiff) is usually trying to get an award of money damages from the other party (the defendant)- but sometimes the plaintiff will ask the court for other kinds of relief, such as:
An injunction directing the defendant to do or not do something;
An order evicting a tenant from a piece of real property.
An order stating that the plaintiff is the owner of a particularly piece of real property and that the defendant has no interest in it.
A declaration that a patent on an invention is either valid or invalid.

Civil litigation is a civil action to protect a private, civil right or to compel a civil remedy in a dispute between private parties. Civil litigation is different from criminal prosecution. Civil litigation usually result in monetary compensation whereas criminal prosecution result in fine or jail terms.
Civil litigation is very expensive. If you do not think the other party has money, you better off not to sue. As a matte of fact, it is always better to settle out of court.

Some might say that it is an oxymoron, but basically it is any law suit brought by one individual or company against another - as opposed to criminal litigation which is when a state or federal government sues an individual or company for violation of the criminal laws.
