Take the day off from work, sleep in late, have a nice hot mocha, go for a walk near the beach or mountains or someplace calming. Talk to everyone on the phone. Work out, rent a great movie, grab something that you love that's absolutely horrible for you and enjoy the evening. And make a commitment to yourself to keep imporving to the day you die, in whatever way you define as improvement.

First, before your birthday even comes, watch the movie "THE Secret" it will transform your life, and it is the type of shift you need in your life, it will help with positivity too! Next, put out what you want, in you life, and visualize it happening, and then, take action into your own hands.
I recently moved to California from NY and I know what it's like to have difficulty without your loved ones, so what you need to do, is what ever makes you happy. See if you can get the money for a plane ticket, if not, ask, if your friends could get together as a birthday gift, put money towards a ticket.
What ever you do, it is important that you choose to be happy. Feelings are a choice
:-)

Things that make me feel better (some may require the closest weekend to your birthday):
Go on a road trip: drive to Canada or Mexico, whichever is closer, just for the scenery. Take all your favorite CD's.
Go to an Indian casino and play penny slots/5cent blackjack.
Go skiing for the day if you live near somewhere that you can.
Pizza and movies.
Set some sort of crazy goal for the day, like a 20-mile hike (prepare first and keep safety in mind).
See if a friend or family member will rendezvous with you somewhere in the middle of the country for a weekend.
Take a greyhound bus somewhere.
Treat yourself to something special, like a personal trainer, that will help you improve your life.
Good luck. Some people have great birthdays; I'm usually not one of them.

I'm sorry you have to be away from friends and family on your birthday! But I think you can make it special and meaningful by being around other people. Take yourself to a play or concert or sporting event. Or spend part of the day helping others - building a Habitat House or feeding the homeless. You'll meet new people and maybe make some new friends. Happy 30th!

Make some friends at work... inviting them out to do something for your 30th birthday would be a great ice breaker and way to get to know more people. I don't know where you live so it's hard to know what exactly is near by. Any casinos near by? Invite people over for a party at your house. Decorate and have a bunch of food... order a party sub from Subway, get some chicken wings, vegi platter, all your favorite stuff and your favorite cake. If you were in the military near here I as a military spouse would throw you a party myself... hope you have some good people you work with.

Put out a question "Will everybody send me an e-card for my birthday."
Take 30 quarters or 30$ and find 30 to make happy with them.
A 7yr. old is in heaven with 30 cents at the grocery store...even if you have to leave them on the floor in front of them.

Spend time with friends or anyone you like or go out to get a great meal and watch a movie or two to get your mind off something which is really just another day.

Be random! Call in sick from work, drive around, get food, go to a movie, veg out at home, call your friends and family, try something you've always wanted to do. Buy yourself some junk food and watch TV or a movie or something. Play video games.

first stop feeling so sorry for your self. if you do not have friends then make some, if you do not have money, then go for a walk and enjoy the sights, all you seem to fine the negative to dwell on and there is so much positive stuff in you life you just to not see it so perhaps if you volunteer with some people that are really in a desperate way perhaps a home less shelter or a food bank you will see and appreciate what you have, rather than moan about what you do not have
