I have tetra flakes but he just puts it in his mouth and spits it out

I've had a variety of fish for awhile and had never seen a painted tetra before and didn't realize that they had been injected with dye. Thanks Sera ad gypzndog for actually answering my question and not ridculing me for getting this fish.

You could try some freeze dried food like tubiflex or blood worms. Or you could try some vegetables like zucchini or peas. Peas will clear out anything that is blocking the fish's stomach.

Poor guy, you have been suckered into buying a fish that has been injected with a dye, under poor conditions, and will probably not live long. It may never eat. Even if that poor tortured soul lives long enough, he'll lose his color. It's a brutal act, and you should never purchase these fish again!

oh i really hope that you are new to the whole fish thing and didnt know any better.... please please please dont ever buy those again. why do people think that is neat??? are not enough colourful fish out there? why did someone have to come up with such a cruel way to make money??? the poor thing is probably too stressed to eat. or it is sick as he will get any disease that may come into your tank.
if people would only not buy painted fish there would no longer be a market for them.....again, i really hope you didnt know....

added: i was not meaning to be mean to you, it upsets me that petstores that sell these fish dont tell people what has happened to them. i didnt know about them either until i happened to come across a site while researching tetras.

Why would you buy painted fish. I don't think you realize the cruelty in painted fish. The fish go through hell to get the coloration that is artificially put into them.

Tetra flakes are the appropriate food. He might just be trying to soften it up. He's probably getting enough food.

They eat your soul because they were painfully injected with dyes when they were young.
