Take the square root of the numerator and place that over the square root of the denominator. So take the square root of 1 (which is 1) and place it over the square root of 4 ( which is 2) . This renders 1/2.

Try this approach:
If x is the sqrt(1/4) then
x^ 2 = 1/4
now, solve for x
x^2-1/4 = 0
You can use quadratic or you can factor. The problem with factoring is that you need to know the sqrt(1/4)!
Another approach is to express 1/4 using exponents:
1/4 = 1/(2^2)= (1/2)*(1/2), badda boom, that's it.
(1/2)^2 = 1/4
which means
1/2 = sqrt(1/4)
