I would definitely say that it's PHP on top. Just because of simplicity of sintax, worldwide user support (look at how many forums are there) and possibilities it can do- just about anything you can think of in web programming... And also PHP is opensource if you understand what benefit that automatically has.

Java and C++ is actually a whole different thing and i can't see how its related to web programming at all. Sure, you can install 3d party plugin to support Java in clients web browser and deal with billion problems in this language, but it's just not cool.

I wouldn's call XHTML a "programming language" either (rather a markup language). But you have to know this language also well if you are going to build web pages.

Sorry Alvin, it doesn't work that way trying to rank from best to worst. Different computer languages in general tend to have advantages and disadvantages in each.

If you're looking for the best ones to learn first, I'd say Java, XML, VB, then eventually ".NET". All work together in different ways excelling in areas that another can't.

Of course, before going for .NET, you'll need experience in C++, which should come relatively easy once you've mastered Java. A lot of the concepts carry over from one to the other, although the terminology is different.

if you are looking for how to edit webpages and making layouts and all of that, you will first need to learn HTML, almost all sites use it, then of course there is Css, and javascript, then the new XHTML, if you search on google you will find more. :D

anyways good luck
