It certainly is! Those folks must be quick, precise, in very good physical shape, and learn some remarkably complex moves, both as individuals and as a team. It ain't just a bunch of leggy little girls waving pom-poms and squealing "Go team go!"...

Yes it is a sport. They compete against other cheer leading teams and try to out do each in different types of competitions. It is also one of the most dangerous sports. There are lots of injuries in this sport. It is not a greatly recognized event but it still is a sport. If you compare event to event then you can say just about any thing could qualify. Checkers , Chess, Golf, Tennis, Car racing. I find all of these sports or events boring. That doesn't change the fact that they are competing against someone else for an award or trophy of some type. It makes it a game and therefore a sport in it's own sense. I hope this helps.

Of course it is!
sports:
Noun
1. a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
that is the definition of sports, and it works for cheerleading to. Sports are simply working with a team to win or just have some fun. Cheerleading is actually a tough sport because of all the dance moves you have to do and also its a hard workout, people may think its easy but its a-lot harder then it looks. Don't listen to people that say its not a sport, tell them to try it and if they do they will see its not as easy at it seems.

Absolutely not. Sure, there's cheerleading competitions and all, but the basis of cheerleading is for the girls (generally) to cheer for the boys (again, generally).
Cheerleading, in my opinion, is a waste of some of the best young athletes there are. Cheerleaders work too hard and stay in way too good of shape to not get credit for participation in real sports. Cheerleaders also suffer some of the worst debilitating injuries.
I am NOT a big fan of cheerleading.

It is because you have competitions (games and competitions), you learn routines (plays), and you have to practice to get better (practice makes perfect).
Everything in parentheses is for football.
And to the people who say it isn't, think about pro football. There's cheerleaders there and they get paid big time. It's a career, or at least it can be. And to the one girl, GOLF IS A SPORT! There's a thing called PRO GOLF and when something can be pro, it's a sport. Pro-Football, Pro-Basketball, is there a need to go on?

I don't think you can call it a sport when they're just at the football games or the basketball games. But if they are in those cheerleading competitions competing against other schools, then that would be considered a sport.

Yes and no. It's very athletic. You have to be incredible strong and proficient. BUT, the primary purpose of cheerleading is not to compete with other teams (although I know that they do compete - but that's not the primary purpose) - it's to support and encourage teams. My definition of a sport is that you're primarily competing against another person or team in a physically active activity.
