In the US it sure depends on where you live. Coming from the Washington D C area, if you didn't make $40,000 you honestly couldn't afford to live within 20 miles of where you worked. I'm now in South Carolina and housing is so much cheaper, I think a single person could get by on $20,000 to $25,000 being pretty comfortable. I'm retired but if I worked here, I would like to make $35,000 to $40,000 and I would be living well.

This is a loaded question. Before you can say that a wage level is on poverty level, or below it, you have to be sure about the levels you are comparing it to such as

1. Cost of living in the area
2. Average wages for the same job in the same county, similar counties
3. Minimum wage of that state
4. Is it straight wages or are there other benefits, free meals, transportation, allowances, board and lodging.that were not calculated.

federal poverty level is about $20,475 to 27,000 per year for a family of three

As of 2005, a family of 4 was considered poor at around 20k or lower. A single person is considered poor below 10k.

I believe that the gov. set the level at 15,000 but have raised that to 20,000 now. It could be different in each state. I think that you could just do an average to come up with a figure for your state. Or you could go to your state gov. economics stats and see what they say.

I think that it is 11000 or 12000 for a family of two in Illinois - it should be similar (5 -6K for one person!)

I would assume that under $30,000 combined family income would make getting by kinda tough.
In Texas........double it....everything is bigger in Texas, I hear.

18,600 family of four. I don't know if it makes a difference if you are poor in Texas or not. I suppose it would.
