Check out Joe Satriani. He wasn't in a band, but is one of the all time best instrumental guitarists. Steve Vai is also amazing, he played with David Lee Roth for awhile. Some other great guitarists are Eric Johnson, he's known for Cliffs of Dover. John Petrucci is also an amazing guitarist. He plays with Dream Theatre.
