How did the one finger salute originated

It was used by the Greeks and the Romans. It was called different things at different times. It was first mentioned in a Greek play The Clouds by Aristophanes.

back in the days when the English used longbows the finger was necessary to " draw " the bow and shoot the arrow. when the French were fighting the English they would cut this finger off so the archer could no longer " draw " his bow and shoot arrows. the one finger salute became a sign that " I still have my finger and can still fight. "
