I'm sure it's possible some day to know the exact human population, but it would be difficult to implement a system and rather expensive. I'd much rather keep guessing and use the money somewhere a bit more productive.

That will never happen. There is no way to know the exact number since people are born in remote areas where there's hardly anyone around (like tribe people) and people die or disappear without notice. There are homeless people that no one really knows about so how would we know when every one of them die?

What would be the point?

The estimates we currently do are close enough for all practical purposes.

There's no reason to know exactly how many people are living at any particular moment.

Besides, you'd need a way to guarantee that every baby got one at birth, and that none of them ever malfunctioned.

Pessimistic but what about if all but 5 people are killed by nuclear war or something catastrophic. Those 5 people might not know that they are all that is left but if all there lives they never met anyone else- to them atleast that would be the amount of people in (their) world. So I say anything is possible.
