It will make you feel better and you will definitely know what is wrong and how to fix it. Only doc can tell you what is really wrong. Muscle twitching can be caused by stimulants like caffine, athsma medication, nadequate magnesium intake. Over-exertion is another risk factor for magnesium. Treatment is with supplements or increased intake of foods rich in magnesium, especially almonds & other nuts, and bananas.
Muscle twitching also often occurs during a rest period after sustained stress, such as that brought on by unconsciously tense muscles. Reducing stress and anxiety is therefore another useful treatment.
Stay away from stimulants, drink more water, and start taking a daily vitamine that includes magnesium.

A solution to your practical problem may be Ambien, a sleeping medicine that is non addictive.
I assume the problem is subtle and most of the day it is not noticed.
Nerves do wear out as we age, you may have often seen old people twitching and so forth. I am not sure why, but nerves are somewhat like very tiny electrical wires, and as we age the fat coatings around the wires can wear thin and impulses jump out of their ordinary channel, causing other nerves to fire, making a twitch.
It is only annoying, although it should be kept in mind if it gets worse. In some diseases the fat coatings on all the nerves slowly dissolves, and then there is a serious problem.
The other responses, regarding the chemicals involved in the nerves, are also possible variables in the problem that it would not hurt to check.

You could try having a glass of Tonic Water with Quinine in it about a half hour before you lay down. If that doesn't work...check with a Doctor because it could be telling you that you have heart or circulatory problems. I have Restless Leg Syndrome, and take a medication which calms me enough to stay asleep. No fun at all, is it! Best of luck!

sounds like you have restless leg syndrome. A possible treatment for restless leg syndrome might be a diet high in natural iron: dark leafy vegetables and high protein meats contain large quantities of such natural iron. If your iron intake is still insufficient, try some high quality iron complex capsules from your local health food store. For a good nights sleep try inexpensive natural herbal remedies which promote leg rest and circulation. Limit your diet with a minimum of sugar or sweets.

I don't know about the zinc, calcium, magneseum, potassium answers but from a similar experience I encountered it was as simple as dehydration. Calcium is probably not the issue. Try eating some banana's (for Potassium). If it is an issue of lacking minerals in your body it will probably not completely fix itself in one day. It may take some time to get them built up in your system.

You can try doing some 'meditation' before you get into bed, because this could be just that you're still too 'wound up' to be able to relax and go to sleep naturally ... but if it is 'doing your head in' to the point that you just 'can't fall asleep for hours' then you NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR and tell him EXACTLY what is 'happening' with your body ... and do what he tells you to do, whether it's exercise, take pills, meditate, or whatever...

try taking melatonin pills...they might not help with the twitching but they will help you fall asleep, they are a vitamin that you can get at like GNC or your drug store maybe and they will help you fall asleep and won't make you groggy when you wake up the next day and don't really have a risk for dependency if you take like one 3 mg pill before bed

It might be that restless leg syndrome. I have that happening on my legs and I've felt that in my arms as well.
It's like a twitching, tightening, and tingling sensation all wrapped up in one.
