yeah the only problem with that though is that when i get electrical tape, the duct tape will be too hard to get off. It took me a lot of meticulous effort and steady hands to get the wiring right, so that no bare wires are touching each other (there are 5 different colored wires). So when I tape it, i need ot make sure it stays that way and is permanent. Ill probably jus go out and buy electrical tape because I heard of duct tape being problematic on bare wires (maybe thats for only high voltage products but maybe I shouldn't risk it).

This is to Sandyspacecase:
I started getting this "power surge on USB hub" error when using my mouse about a month ago. I couldn't figure out what the problem might be. I then went down the wire, and found there was a puncture in it and the wiring was completely messed up. I was about to throw it away, but then I did this.
I cut around each side of the puncture, leaving three pieces, and threw away the middle (punctured) piece. I then stripped the ends of the two remaining pieces about 1-2 inches. Be careful not to cut it, but simply strip the insulater. Inside you will find a green, white, black and red smaller wires, and then a lot of this silver wire. The red and black are power and ground (not sure about the others). Unravel anything around the colored wires so that you can individually strip them. Twist all silver wire into one part and push it as much out of the way as you can. When all the colored wires are stripped on each side, twist them together and then twisth thesilver
