As I haven't seen any 5 year olds and up flying around on broomsticks playing quidich or chasing moaning myrtle through houses, I'd have to say it's harmless Fiction.
Do we have to live in a world where every children's book is totally sterile of any imagination, imagine how many works of children's fiction would not exist if we let the censors here loose.

Totally harmless. Magic, villains, dragons, good vs. evil, are fantasy ideas that have been in countless stories ever since the oral tradition. What sin would you be committing by reading a story? Sin is a much more serious thing than that. As a matter of fact, the good characters in the story are actually very moral. Anyone who is unsure should pick up the books and read them for themselves before making any kind of decision. I think that anyone who does will be pleasantly surprised.

Absolutely harmless. I began reading it when I was about 8 and it did wonders for me. It turned me on more than ever to reading, dramatically expanded my vocabulary, and made the difference between "what is right, and what is easy" very, very clear. I owe a lot to the author of Harry Potter. It positively affected my life in so many ways...I've made many valuable friends because of the common interest in the series.

For the love of all that's good, it is harmless fun. What on earth would make it sinful. It's fiction, fantasy, make believe. What reference made in the movie would possibly be sinful. They don't blasfamy any religion or any race, or species in this case.

sinful??? oh jeez its the salem witch trials all over again =P.
ok harry potter is a book about a kid who goes to a wizarding school . do we call gandalf, the greatest wizard in all of fantasy novels, SINFUL? i think not.
the force that jedi use in star wars could be interpreted as sinful to some people because since the force did not come from god, it may have come from the devil? do we think the jedi knights are SINFUL?
thank you for your time and good night.
