Rats are at the top of my list. They are sweet and smart. You wont find a mouse or hamster that comes when their called.

I say with no hesitation that a Ferret is number one!!!! I have had three at one time. The only reason I got rid of them was because we had to move. Now that I own my own house I will be getting another one. No, they do not stink. They have musk glands that are removed on the farm when they are born. Any pet store that sells them will get them from a farm. You will know this by the tattooed ear. They are only as stinky as the keeper allows them to be. Keep the cage clean and give them a bath every six months and your good. If you find one that likes water then you can let them play in the tub and you're even better off. Have fun with your new ferret!!

Most definitely Pet Rats are at the top of *my* list for the best rodent pet, and I've had mice, gerbils and hamsters, before rats.

Pet rats rarely, if ever bite. They would rather give whisker kisses and love nibbles.
Pet rats are more like small dogs then rodents.
Pet rats love to interact with humans and enjoy using us a jungle gyms..............
I could go on, but then I would be babbling and gushing about my babies.

I'm an older person and got hooked on rats in my 30s. I've had around 200 rats in the last 10 years, and I will be living with rats for a long time to come.

Yep, totally devoted to the little furries.

rabbits are always going to be the best. theyre my fav. animal next to dogs.
many of the breeds are absolutely adorable or if not, at least a little cute.
bunnies are very friendly for the most part as well.
most of all they look least like a rodent and more like a pet.
they might be smarter too..dunno. i havent had any other rodents.
i also love the fact that they are very playful. its always fun to take my Mini Rex mum out for a "walk"..and was even fun to take the English Spot out.
very interesting animals..its entertaining to watch what they do and get into.

i think best is a loose term though..it would be hard to get a certified answer. best is different for many people. it depends on what the individual is used to.

Ferrets are not rodents ! but I would choose one over any of the above because they are personable and playful. My friend has one and it is adorable! they climb all over you and are good with kids, if it gets out of the cage or out of the house they usually will come back just by rattling their favorite toy!Chinchillas are second because they are soft and cute but they have a very long lifespan and tend to get lost if they get outside. Mice and rats are just snake food. but a ferret will do battle with a snake !

I've been through about four rats over the past few years. I always liked them because they we're smart and loved sitting on your shoulder. Then I got two mice for the first time. They are cuter than rats, though they didn't seem to want to stay with me as much. I recently got my first hamster and love him to pieces. I hadn't gotten a hamster in the past because I heard they bite. But mine hasn't even tried to bite me once. (I think it just depends on which one you pick.) I've decided he's my favorite out of the different types of rodents I've owned. Now, mice and rats kind of creep me out because of their tails.

I have been wanting a ferret for the longest time, but I know they require a lot more attention and time than other types of rodents.

I have two guina pigs, and I used to have a hamster. Guinea pigs, to me, are the best rodent pets because of their gentle nature. Guinea pigs don't bite unless the are extremely angry. They are big enough to handle without worrying about them running out of your hands but are small enough to be kept in a cage. They are kind animals and are pretty low maintence. Just make sure to hold them regularly and clean their cage once a week and supply fresh pellet food and fruit and water daily. Hamsters are way to hyperactive and can be hard to handel. Same with mice and gerbils i'm sure.

Choose a young hamster not only for cuteness, but for sociability. Choose a hamster that relaxes in your hand, washes himself and seems plump, bright-eyed, alert and curious about you. Choose only one hamster.
Hamsters are active at night. The best time to clean the cage or exercise your hamster is in the evening or morning, rather than at midday when hamsters prefer to rest undisturbed.
Tame your young hamster by handling daily and rewarding calm behavior with vegetable treats.
If your hamster's wheel is keeping you up at night, remove the wheel at bedtime, and replace when you wake up.
Introduce your hamster to people and situations gently; a scared hamster can give a painful bite.
When you put your hamster in a plastic exercise ball, keep the ball away from stairs. A fall downstairs can result in serious injury.
When choosing a place for your hamster cage, make it out of reach of other household pets who may be a threat to your hamster.
Keep hamster bedding warm and dry--moisture can cause fatal infections.
Do not give in to temptation and buy two hamsters to live together--even if they are littermates they will either breed immediately (and you'll have twenty hamsters) or fight, often to the death.

I love ferrets, but they are not rodents. They are weasels. I think chinchillas are a good choice, they are soft and lovable. I like to watch them take dust baths. Here is a link with the info on the family ferrets are from.

Ferrets are fun, you can buy a special harness for them and take them for walks. They also love to play, best to get 2
Gerbils are interesting as they are burrowing rodents and if you use a large glass aquarium, you can fill it with sand and actually watch them.
Beware though, rodents breed like crazy...if you get 2 then get same sex
