You want someone to narrow down 10 years worth of events to one idea!!!!! And without giving at least a broad topic?????
Why is it that you're having trouble doing your own research for your own homework? In particular, why are you having trouble doing your own research for your own homework about a period in which you didn't have the internet to use as a tool in doing your own research.
Yes, there's a hint there, and a big one, but it has nothing to do with a topic for you.

In the 1980's people did research in libraries, not Yahoo Answers. That could be your opening line.
