close your eyes - picture yourself in your car or in your shower - that's where I sing the best - and with all my heart.

Getting on stage is an extremely hard thing to do. I used to be afraid of singing in front of people also because I was shy and had low self esteem. I'll tell you what I do to take away my shyness. I just think that I'm in my shower or bedroom singing to myself and I don't look directly at the crowd I look in between seats. I also have very low self esteem, but when I'm on stage singing to people every bodies eyes are on me and everybody thinks that I have a wonderful voice. Being on stage brings joy to the people you are performing for and to know that I have touched someone that night makes me gain self esteem. Another way that helps me build self esteem is by thinking in my head that I had the guts to get up there and at least try. There are many people who are to afraid of trying. If you never try you'll never succeed. The crowd can either make you or break you. Always remember though that their is someone standing behind you no matter how good or bad you are. You will always have people there to talk to and tell them how you feel.

Concentrate on the qualities of the song, not yourself. You are just the instrument. People who are shy place too much attention on themselves or their self perceived awkwardness.

Also ask yourself what being shy accomplishes for you? At some point in time there must have been some payback for that behavior. Otherwise it would extinguish itself. How has being shy helped you in the past?

Also just remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes from time to time and your mistakes are probably no bigger than anyone else's. Your mistakes do not make you special but they do help to remind other people that you are human. And sometimes others exaggerate your mistakes because down deep you're reminding them of places they have made mistakes and they would rather forget because it brings up momentary feelings of shame regardless of how misplaced they may be. Remember too that shyness itself is just a feeling and you get to choose how you feel, although it may take some practice and a decision on your part. Good luck.

Same thing as me, and i learned it the hard way. I pretended to be someone i was not and i didn't work out. So, i was just being my self again and i sang in front of my friends... then more friends, then finaly the whole school. Maybe you should try something like that, it will work, and you can try other stuff to get you to be more out going. Like taking part in other activities, talking to other people more and a lot more. I hope it works!Good Luck!

The best way to overcome that is to just practice a lot until you're confident of your ability to sing. I had the same problem with playing my guitar and I just practiced and practiced until I was convinced that even if I screwed it up it would sound good.

well years ago i had the same problem i used to sing with a group and when the Oakridge boys was a gospel group we use to sing first so i handle my fear i used to not focus on anyone person in the audience and look to the wall straight ahead to the back of the auditorium and this worked well for me
