I have a 21-year-old cousin that I'm close with, who moved from Staten Island, NY to Liverpool when she was 5. She picked me up at the airport, and the first thing she said to me was "Good god, you look like a chav." When I asked her if she meant my physical features or the way I was dressed, she said it was the way I was dressed. I remember I had a ponytail (like my avatar), big silver hoop earrings, and a Juicy sweatsuit (I know, they're "out", but it was the comfiest thing I could wear on an airplane). I had Converse All-Star shoes, Burberry luggage, and not too much makeup. I asked her to explain, and she was like, "You should probably wear something else, some people judge a lot." What the hell is a chav? Doesn't that mean "sexist"? Like "Chavinistic pig"? And why is it bad if I look l ike one?

CHAV - Council House and Violent

It kinda means tacky? It means you look like you came off a council estate (please don't take offence anyone! - I know lots of nice people from council estates!)

But if it is what you want to wear then wear it! It doesn't matter that much! Just don't adopt the CHAV face! (Like you are chewing a wasp when you look at anyone who isn't your friend!) (Chewing gum with your mouth open has a similar effect).

"Chav is a mainly derogatory slang term in some parts of England for a subcultural stereotype fixated on fashions such as gold jewellery and designer clothing. They are generally considered to have no respect for society, as well as being considered ignorant or unintelligent. The defining features of the stereotype include clothing in the Burberry pattern (notably a now-discontinued baseball cap) and from a variety of other casual and sportswear brands. Tracksuits, hoodies, sweatpants and baseball caps are particularly associated with this stereotype. Response to the term has ranged from amusement to criticism that it is a new manifestation of classism. The term has also been associated with delinquency."

I hope i can anser this without insulting anyone.... here goes...
Chavs are people (usually young) who wear loads of designer gear especailly Burberry, and lots of big jewellry. It doesnt mean sexist, but used to describe someone who years ago might be described as looking 'common as muck' or a 'tart' . But a chav can be male or female. They look to me as if they are trying too hard to look as if they've got loads of money and want people to know it - ostentatious is I think the right word. Many chavs will of course not be wearing the real thing but designer labels that are counterfeit. My hubby has just said football hooligans also wear burberry.

Chav is British slang for a certain type of person associated with council estates, drunkenness, smoking, underage pregnancy, shop-lifting, aggressive behaviour and poor verbal skills.

Classically, they wear sports gear and cheap jewellery. Burberry is famous for it's popularity among Chavs.

Don’t worry about what she says. Females try to undermine each other. She thinks you are trying to get all the men for your self. Keep dressing nice.
