This is not a multiplication, but an addition.

You plug the values between 1 and 3, and you get this:

2^1 + 2^2 + 2^3 = 2 + 4 + 8 = 14

∑ is a Greek letter, the sigma, and its used as the initian of "sum"

I think I can follow what you're saying... it's the summation for i = 1 to 3 of 2^i. In other words, 2 + 4 + 8 = 14

That capital greek letter sigma is for summation. The index, i, starts at 1 and goes in steps of 1 up to 3

That means:

2^1 + 2^2 + 2^3

Every value of i represents one term in the summation.

Ok it just means that you substitute all the values between the top and bottom value for i , and add up the results.
