Work backwards. Figure out what software you want to use and if there are any special hardware that you will need to attach. That should help you decide if a portable computer is an option.

Obviously a Mac has a bit of an edge given the number of professional sound professionals who use them in a studio or on the road.

Based on price the Mac and the major name brand PCs all cost approximately the same. Compared to Dell the Mac is within $100 if you pick the same spec. $100 cheaper in some cases. $100 more in other cases. You will have to work through the details to see what might be correct in your situation.

Get a Macbook or Macbook Pro. Not only do you get iTunes pre-installed, it comes bundled with the music creating app GarageBand. As for any PC's: PC's aren't designed for music whatsoever. Besides, even though you could spend hundreds of $ on programs that let you record music on a PC, the same stuff and more is bundled on a Mac. Plus, Macs are more secure, so don't get a PC and think that your music files are going to stick around forever.
