For those who do not know about the Stroop Effect, the Stroop Effect is a demonstration of interference in the reaction time of a task. When a word such as blue, green, red, etc. is printed in a color differing from the color expressed by the word's semantic meaning (e.g. the word "red" printed in blue ink), a delay occurs in the processing of the word's color, leading to slower test reaction times and an increase in mistakes.
Try the demonstration here, its way easier than explaining it :)

As for how it applies to modern life, well I would say it shows that reading (or other automatic processes) are difficult to inhibit and that they will interfere in how we process other information about the world.

Stroop effect is effectively automatic reading. Anythign that relies on automatic processing follows a stroop like effect. advertising sometimes uses this technique; putting certain words in bold, italics or colour use. You will automatically read this, then follow by reading the rest of the ad.

One of the most interesting things I have seen for the Stroop effect, is the way that it has been used on sexual offenders (Smith & Waterman from Leeds Univeristy, UK).
They found that when words related to sex were incorporated, along with neutral words, that when sexual offenders were tested, the sex words took longer to process (a good way to monitor progress for sexual offender treatment).
Hope this helps.
