When I turned on my computer last week it booted up as far as showing my usual background picture but the usual rows of icons did not appear on the left side of the screen. No amount of manipulations and clicking caused any change. I had to turn the machine off and back on to get it to boot up in the usual way. Also, three times since then when I tried to get on the internet "your attempt failed". What caused these things and what can I do about it?

Each time your computer boots it loads a variety of programs or applications. One of these programs is failing to load properly and is locking up your computer. Start your computer in safe mode (when you first boot hit f8 key repeatedly until boot menu appears) this will stop those programs from running.

If your computer finishes booting then you are on your way to the solution. While in safe mode go to Start>Run and type in "msconfig" and hit enter. Click on the startup tab. This will list programs that are started each time you boot. You can uncheck programs disabling them from starting. DO NOT DISABLe your antivirus or firewall software. Try disabling different programs until you figure out your problem program.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
