an absolute value changes the number from a positive to a positive or a negative to a negative. in order to solve something that has multiple numbers between the | |, solve for X first then take the absolute value.

x+1 = 6
x=5
x+1=-6
x= -7

you change the 6 into neg 6 for another equation b/c if the inside equation equals neg 6, the absolute value brackets | | will change it into a positive 6

Absolute value means that the original value is either equal to 6 or equal to -6. |-6|=6. So X=5 will bring you |X+1|=|5+1|=|6|=6. Also, if X+1=-6, then X=-6-1=-7. Therefore |-7+1|=|-6|=6.

The absolute value of a number is 6, so the number must be either 6 or -6.

So 6=x+1 or -6=x+1, now solve for x.

The other value of "x" is -7 (negative 7). That's because -7 + 1 = -6 (negative 6). And the absolute value of -6 = 6.

x = -7 is the other one.

|-7 + 1| = | -6| = 6

one solution is x=5 and the other is x=-7
Because the absolute value ignores the sign.
so 6 = |6| and 6 = |-6|
