McCarthyism is a term used for this time period, the movement was lead by Sen. Joseph McCarthy. To be "blacklisted" in the 1950's meant that you were suspected of communism.

McCarthyism ---so named after U.S. Senator Joe McCarthy
Also known in some circles as the "Red Witch Hunt" of the 20th Century--- there were countless lives needlessly ruined in this madcap, fear driven , all out effort by a select few to demonize as many people that they didn't like as was humanly possible !!

Joe McCarthy was the driving force behind this "movement" to "rid the country of it's commie citizenry " ---and history points out that MOST ALL of the investigations of this period were false leads and trumped up garbage !!
